A car that runs on biogas instead of conventional CNG, low cost waterless urinals capable of saving over 100 thousand litres of water per urinal per day, fibre wrapping to protect buildings from earthquakes and solar-powered refrigeration systems - these are some projects that will be showcased at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi on April 19.
Over 140 demo projects will be on display at IIT-D's Open House, the annual technical exposition displaying the finest student projects of the institution.
Speaking about the event, director of the institute R K Shevgaonkar said, "Over the years, we have received an overwhelming response from the public, schools and colleges, and this is what has encouraged us to carry on. The 10th edition hopes to live up to that image for the eyes of tech connoisseurs."
Among the products on display will be a biogas-fuelled car, which uses biogas technology for green vehicular fuel.
"Rapid industrialisation and population increase has resulted in generation of huge quantity of waste, both solid and liquid. Hence, there is a huge potential for installation of medium to large size biogas plants. Since biogas can also be used as an alternative to CNG, a biogas based fuel, constitutes a greener alternative to traditional CNG," professor V K Vijay, from Centre of Rural Development and Technology, IIT, Delhi, said.
The event will also showcase waterless urinal technology, which recovers nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus salts from urine, and is a low-cost technology to recover fertilisers from human urine.
"So far, we have installed around 1,000 such urinals across the country. They can be retrofitted into existing urinals as well," Uttam Banerjee, an former student who developed the product, said.
Besides displaying projects, Open House will also have educative sessions on new trends in science and technology to help eradicate disease and on cloud computing vis-a-vis the development of badal, the IIT Delhi Computing Cloud.
