Private equity investments jumped to USD 5.8 billion in the first six months of 2011, driven by higher number of large-size transactions as well as increased activities in the infrastructure space, says E&Y.

India's growth story continues to attract global investors with inbound investment deals rising three-fold to $17.4 billion in the first six months of 2011. The value of outbound transactions dropped sharply to $5.8 billion from $17.8 billion in the year-ago period.

Rural India too reaps fruits of growth story  
Rural Indian households are spending more on consumer goods like durables, beverages and services than five years ago, shows the latest expenditure data that debunks the notion that rapid growth in recent years did not benefit the hinterlands. The household consumer expenditure survey for 2009-10, released by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), shows rising real spending in rural areas, even though it is almost half of urban India’s, suggesting increasing incomes.

Growing home textiles market in India  
The home textiles market in India is estimated to be 17 billion USD and is growing at over 9 per cent annually. The home textiles and furnishings market is expected to reach 26.6 billion USD by 2015.

Coming soon: Indian Coins with new symbol  
The Indian government released new series coins of Rs 1, 2, 5 and 10, bearing the rupee symbol, which will be in circulation soon. A new series coin of 50 paise was also released.

India's June exports up 46.4 percent  
India's merchandise exports rose 46.4 percent in June at $29.2 billion compared to June 2010, Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar said.

Tata Motors' Africa unit to begin operations   
Tata Motors said it will begin operations of an assembly plant for commercial vehicles in South Africa within the next few days. "We have set up an assembly plant in South Africa and this is a commercial vehicle plant. Its just matter of days to announce the details and start operations of the plant," said a Tata Motors spokesperson.

India has contributed to a large reduction in global poverty, according to the UN annual report on the Millennium Development Goals , which also pointed out that despite progress, the most vulnerable sections of society were being left out.

Telecom operators added 13.35 million mobile subscribers in May 2011, taking the total number of telephone users in the country to 874.68 million, sectoral regulator TRAI said.

India to train Kyrgyz Armed Forces  
Stepping up its engagement with Central Asia, India will be sending a military team to train the Kyrgyz Armed Forces by the end July. India has also offered more assistance to strengthen the defence capabilities of Kyrgyzstan, which was personally conveyed by Defence Minister A K Antony, who is on a three day visit to that country.

India will not compromise on drug licensing norms and continue to produce generic drugs for free treatment to HIV positive patients, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said.
